Depending upon the type of clay being processed, this will determine many of the physical properties of the clay dust and how you design your system. The region where the clay is mined can also have an effect as to any appreciable silica concentrations within the clay. If so, the performance of the dust collection system must be measurably increased to conform with MSHA guidance for respirable crystalline silica dust as opposed to standard clay dust which is generally considered a nuisance dust only (in the absence of silica). Depending upon the type of mineral being processed, this will determine many of the physical properties of the dust and how the system should be designed. For heavier, abrasive dusts, a lowered transport velocity range is required so that you can have prolonged elbow life while keeping your ductwork free of material settlement. However, for extremely light-weight dusts, such as perlite, the capture hoods should have a distinctive ‘settling chamber’ so that you do not over-extract good material, and the transport velocity will be further reduced than for standard weight dusts which can be an energy saver. For minerals with a nuisance dust classification or any minerals with a silica element, JOA has the experience and capabilities to create a cleaner, safer and healthier work environment for your employees and meet either OSHA or MSHA standards.
In the US, pet food manufacturing is governed by the FDA. As such, all US pet food manufacturers must follow Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls. In dry pet food specifically, the dust can be very lightweight, with such a low settling velocity as it appears almost to be “standing still” in the air. Likewise, this dust can be very explosive such that the manufacturing process must have a complete Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) to insure that all known causes for potential for fires, explosions or deflagrations have been properly identified.
JOA designed a customized system, with operator ergonomic and process integrated capture hoods such that they would blend into the work flow and maintain highly effective dust control while enabling continuous productivity of their operators. The final system was NFPA approved for factory and personnel safety. Our duct systems are also designed for optimized transport velocity, thus, we are able to design systems with minimized risk for cross-contamination (on the tubing wall). We have developed specialized capture hoods which reduce over-extraction of good product from 40-80%. We have also designed a specialized cyclone for removing fiberglass particles from the ‘waste’ stream so as to protect the ductwork from plugging and the filter from premature wear. Customized rotational die hoods and atmospheric vent port hoods make our fume hoods easy to position, minimize condensation risks and make for ease of maintenance when necessary. Our ‘minimized duct fouling’ systems have increased extruder uptime from 1-4%.
This was mainly predicated by the recently enacted OSHA respirable crystalline silica standard (29 CFR 1926.1153). These manufacturers wanted to insure that all of their facilities were in compliance with this new standard prior to its 2018 implementation date. Based upon this work, JOA has gained invaluable experience in high performance dust and fume control in both residential and commercial roofing production facilities. Target processes include: Coater (Impregnator), Blender (Surfacing), Slate Drum, Backing Drum (Sand Drum), Straight Section into Cooling Entrance, Use Bins, Filler Heater, Tower, Packaging and Finishing Areas.
We have also developed rugged and reliable central vacuum cleaning systems for the pick-up of spills, general cleaning and the clean-out of reclaim augers or other equipment during an upset. With the installation of JOA industrial ventilation systems, our customers have markedly cleaned up their factories, and have achieved continuous air quality and personal sampling far below the OSHA PEL of 50μg/m3 for respirable crystalline silica.
